HI Guys

So the two 3XV arrived and started stripping em down already. The one bike is not registered - apparently a grey import from Japan. Checked the VIN number with a buddy at SAPS no stolen issues etc. But the Engine Number is blank... only has the starting part of 3XV -                 But no serial number like the other one. Never seen this before and didn't know Yamaha would ever release a bike without an engine number? Perhaps it went straight to track from factory?

But does anyone know if it is possible and how, to register this bike for road use (In SA). If the engine number is blank will they stamp it with a new engine number? Im thinking how do kit cars get registered, shouldn't it be the same procedure?

Paul

That's right. They came from Japan with no engine number. My one engine has a hand stamped nimber. Other is like yours. Both are licenced.

Try have a chat with George from Montclair motorcycles , he brings in bikes from japan and should be able to offer advice . He has brought in TZR's before .

None of my 3 motors have numbers, 2 came out of registered bikes.
Not sure how they where originally licensed or even insured.
I suspect my 3XV 1 is not a grey import and sold as yamaha dealer bike so there must be a loophole of sorts.
Let us know what the traffis departament has to say about it please, curious to know.

That's right, they're all blank from the factory. Same as Crank, I have 2 scrap bikes, both registered but only one of them has the frame number stamped on the engine, the other is still blank.. ::) ?:-|

Not sure about the registration process from scratch though..perhaps somebody else can give you some pointers?

I have called around and getting different answers. One guy says you go to the Police Clearance and they issue a case number which is stamped on and becomes the new engine number. I also called Engines4U in bothasig as they import engines. She said they had a blank once, took it for clearance and got a case number but then the engine was destroyed.

Deffo cant risk that so need to make sure before I do anything. Anyone got Georges contact details so I can call him?

Any other advise please post, and I will keep posting info as I find out myself.

i took the bike for COR, and it passed through
some places are obviously familiar with these things
if you make a noise they will check and you have done nothing wrong, so take it away and go somewhere else

Hi guys, been a while since last on the forum but thought I would post an update as promised to possibly help anyone else in the future.

Good news, I managed to get papers for the dry clutch model now!

To recap:
The bike I bought had a frame number but a blank engine no. I went to the traffic dep. and they pulled old records on the chassis no I gave them. The records showed that chassis no had an engine no of xxxxx. I took the blank engine to get that number of xxxxx to be knocked in underneath the engine. Took to police clearance and passed. The bike was in archive records as it was not licenced since 1998 so I had to take the bike to be weighed, to be checked throughout as specified, ie: is it a Truck or is it a Motorcycle (after some hesitation the certifier ticked Motorcycle ;) ), etc, etc. The same I imagine for getting papers for a vehicle for the first time like a Cobra kit car or something built up yourself.

How hard is it to get papers for a bike? Extremely hard! 3 months of too many trips back and forth to various departments and back paying of licence fee of nearly R3000. My advice, don't buy any bike without papers unless you want to only use it for track use, or stick in your bar ;)

But best news ever is that I have the full papers for the bike, all legit :D

Yip it is a huge excercise in SA. Like you say buy something with papers and license up to date. If it doesnt have and you want it registered say it is build up from various other motorcycles. And be prepared if it is stolen you are out of a bike and keep your receipts. Also let the seller give you his ID and a letter stating he sold you the bike ''foetstoots"

Jumped throught that hoop two times now with my 3ma's.

I had to take mine(in SA) for police clearance where they check if the bike isn't stolen and then stamp an engine number onto it and then just take it for a roadworthy and register it.
